Abisko National Park: The gateway to the mountain world and the beginning of the Kungsleden trail

Stepping off the night train at Abisko Tourist Station is a special feeling. The air is immediately crisper, and the scent of mountain birch and damp lichen hits you right on the platform. Here, 250 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, the adventure begins for thousands of hikers every year. Abisko is not only the starting point for the legendary Kungsleden trail; it is one of Sweden's most accessible and dramatic national parks.

For us at HikingStore, Abisko represents the perfect testing ground. It's a place where your equipment is put to the test against rapid weather changes, but where the proximity to civilization (and the train home) provides a sense of security that makes the park ideal for those looking to test out their first lightweight pack.

The train straight into the adventure

There are few places in the world where you can take a direct train from a big city and get off in the middle of a national park. SJ's night train stops at both Abisko Östra and Abisko Turiststation. For hikers, the latter is the destination – here stands the classic wooden portal that marks the start of the Kungsleden trail.

Choosing the train over the plane is not just an environmental choice. It is a way to mentally recalibrate. During the hours the train rolls through the inland of Norrland, you have time to go through your pack one last time. Is the sleeping bag warm enough? Am I aware of my route choices? The mountains rarely punish those who have prepared logically.

The King's Trail and Abiskojåkka: The first steps

The first stage of the Kungsleden trail runs from Abisko to Abiskojaure. It is a relatively flat 15-kilometer stretch that follows the roaring Abiskojåkka. The Jokken has carved out a mighty canyon in slate and dolomite that is a must-see.

Here you hike through lush mountain birch forest. It is an easy hike, but don't underestimate the terrain. Rocks and roots require attention. For this type of hike, a light backpack is essential. A 3F UL Gear frame backpack or a model from Mobi Garden allows you to enjoy the surroundings instead of struggling with your own pack. The less weight you carry on your shoulders, the more alert your legs will be when you reach the campsite.

Choosing the right tent for the mountain wind

In Abisko, the weather can change in minutes. One moment the midnight sun is shining over Torneträsk, the next strong winds are blowing down from Njulla. When choosing a tent for Abisko and Kungsleden, you should prioritize a balance between light weight and wind stability.

Our most popular choices for this area are the Lanshan series from 3F UL Gear .

  • Lanshan 1 & 2: These tents require trekking poles to set up, saving weight in your overall pack. They have a low profile that cuts through the wind effectively.
  • Logic over trends: Remember that a lightweight tent requires you to learn to choose your campsite carefully. Seek shelter behind a rock or a depression in the terrain.

Sleep is your most important recovery

Mountain nights in Abisko can be cool even in the height of summer. Ground cooling is a factor that many beginners forget. A sleeping pad with sufficient R-value is fundamental to not losing body heat to the ground.

When it comes to sleeping bags, down is the superior choice for hiking in the north. It offers the best insulation for its weight. We often recommend Aegismax sleeping bags like the Aegismax Nano or D1 for summer hikes in Abisko. They are extremely packable and lightweight, leaving more room in the backpack for food and safety gear.

Pro tip: Before you invest in a new sleeping bag, read our complete guide to down . There we go over the difference between goose and duck down, what CUIN (fill power) actually means for your comfort, and how to interpret temperature ratings.

Day trips: Njulla and Lapporten

You don't have to walk the entire Kungsleden trail to experience the magic of Abisko. Many people choose to use Abisko Tourist Station as a base and make day trips.

  1. Njulla (Nuolja): Take the cable car up or hike the steep path. From the top you have an unbeatable view of Torneträsk and the national park. Up here is also the Aurora Sky Station.
  2. Lapporten: The iconic U-valley is one of Sweden's most photographed motifs. A day trip to Lapporten gives you a feel for the truly vast expanses without requiring a full multi-day pack.

For these tours, a small day trip backpack is sufficient, but always bring a rain poncho and a layer of clothing. The weather at the top of Njulla is rarely the same as down in the valley.

The seasons: From midnight sun to the northern lights

Abisko is a year-round destination, but the experience changes completely between the seasons.

  • Summer (June–July): The midnight sun allows you to hike 24/7. It's a surreal feeling to see the sun never set behind the mountain peaks. Be prepared for mosquitoes in the birch forest and make sure you have a tent with a good net (like the Lanshan models).
  • Autumn (September): My personal favorite. The colors explode in red and gold, the air is clear and the mosquitoes are gone. This is also when the chances of seeing the Northern Lights start to increase dramatically.
  • Winter (November–March): Abisko is considered one of the world's best places to see the Northern Lights thanks to the "blue hole" – a microclimate that often keeps the sky clear even when it's cloudy all around.

Safety and balance of the equipment

At HikingStore we advocate lightweight, but never at the expense of safety. Abisko is wild. If you plan on hiking off the beaten path, you need to have gear you can rely on when the rain whips horizontally.

Ask yourself: What is this product actually going to handle? If you know you get cold easily, choose a sleeping bag with a little more fill weight, even if it costs an extra 200 grams. The extra weight will be noticeable in your legs during the day, but a good night's sleep is worth more when you need to get through the next day's stage.

Abisko National Park is the gateway to something bigger. Whether it's your first hike or you're an experienced fox looking for new trails, the park offers a logical and beautiful start to life outdoors. Pack smart, travel by train and let the mountains speak for themselves.

Checklist for the Abisko hike:

  • Tent: A reliable lightweight tent (e.g. Lanshan 1 or 2).
  • Sleeping system: Down sleeping bag from Aegismax and a sleeping pad with good insulation.
  • Kitchen: A compact gas stove for quick meals by the river.
  • Clothing: The layer-on-layer principle. Merino wool closest to the body is a matter of course.
  • Navigation: Map and compass, although the trails are well marked.
