Hiking poles by a forest path with a lake and granite in Västmanland

Västmanland is a landscape where the forest dominates, but never tells the whole story. Here you will find deep Bergslag forests, large lake systems, Lake Mälaren's island world, old mining environments and trails that connect nature and industrial history.

This is the twelfth article in the series “Attractions in every landscape” . The series has followed a line from south to north: from Skåne, Blekinge and Halland to Småland, Öland, Västergötland, Dalsland, Östergötland, Värmland, Närke and Södermanland. Now it is Västmanland’s turn.

The locations below are suitable for both shorter excursions and longer hikes. The terrain is usually accessible, but it is not always easy. Roots, wet bogs, rocky heights and weather changes affect how far you actually get. So ask yourself what each trip will handle before you set off.

1. Hälleskogsbrännan – hiking through a changing landscape

Hälleskogsbrännan Nature Reserve was created after the great forest fire of 2014. It is still one of Västmanland's most distinctive natural areas. Black tree trunks remain among dead wood, while young birches, pines and other vegetation grow up.

This is not a traditional forest walk. The traces of the fire make nature's recovery visible. In some places the landscape feels open and almost desolate. In other places, regrowth is already dense.

At Grävlingsberget there is a viewing tower where you can get an overview of the fire landscape. Those who want to walk further can choose the Långstigen, which is approximately 24 kilometers. There are also shorter options for a half-day trip.

The trails can be uneven and exposed to weather. Bring water even if the hike is not very long, and check with the County Administrative Board of Västmanland for current information. A day-hike backpack , warm clothing, and shoes with good grip often go a long way. The balance is in packing for the actual hike, not for an imagined expedition.

2. Bruksleden – forest, lakes and Bergslag history

The Mill Trail is Västmanland's largest continuous hiking trail. It is about 250 kilometers long and divided into several stages. The trail goes through woodland, marshes, lakes and older mill environments.

The strength is flexibility. You don't need to plan a long hike to get something out of the trail. Choose a stage for the day, or build several sections together for a weekend with an overnight stay. The terrain and elevation changes vary, so check the stage description carefully.

The Bruksleden trail is particularly suitable for those who want to combine nature with cultural history. On some stretches, iron processing is clearly visible through old mills, mining areas and transport routes. On others, you walk for a long time without buildings and get a more cohesive forest feel.

Use the Nature Map for Västmanland County to compare stages, lengths and service. For a multi-day trip, equipment quickly becomes important. A stable tent , a sleeping pad that insulates against the cold ground and a backpack that fits well are more important than chasing every gram.

3. Kolarbyn and the road to Färna – wilderness near Bergslagen

The Kolarbyn village outside Skinnskatteberg is known for its simple kolar huts and its distinct wilderness feel. The area is a good starting point for those who want to experience Bergslagsskog without embarking on a demanding multi-day hike.

One hiking option is the stretch between Kolarbyn and Färna, about 14 kilometers. The tour goes through spruce forests, marshland and the Lapland nature reserve. Here you get the kind of terrain where the distance between the sights is the experience itself.

Nearby is also the Ormdalsslingan trail, which in places runs through damp and lush forest with springs and rich vegetation. After rain, the environment becomes even clearer, but also more slippery.

Plan by season. In summer, insects and heat are factors to consider. During spring and fall, wet sections and rapidly falling temperatures can be more important. Hiking poles can provide better support on uneven ground, but they are no substitute for a map, the right shoes, or plenty of time. The equipment should make the trip safer and smoother, not just look complete.

4. Ängsö Nature Reserve – Lake Mälaren landscape with forest and open fields

Ängsö Nature Reserve, east of Västerås, shows another side of Västmanland. Here, deciduous forest, pastures, coastal meadows and water meet. Ängsö Castle and the older cultural landscapes also provide a historical setting for the hike.

The area is suitable for groups of varying levels of ambition. There are shorter trails of approximately 1.5 to 8.5 kilometers, while the longer route around Ängsö is around 23 kilometers. So you can choose between a leisurely half-day with coffee by the water or a much more physical day trip.

The proximity to Lake Mälaren makes the weather noticeable. A sunny day can feel open and warm on the shore meadows, while wind and rain quickly change the experience. Bring a windproof layer even if the forecast looks stable. Weather changes are more noticeable when you are far from the car than when you are at home packing.

Current information about the area's trails and natural values can be found at the County Administrative Board . The best choice is clothing and equipment that works both in the shade, on open ground and near the water.

5. Ridö–Sundbyholm Archipelago – Lake Mälaren's island world

The Ridö–Sundbyholm archipelago consists of around 160 islands in western Lake Mälaren. Here, it is not a long hiking trail that takes centre stage, but a combination of boat or kayak trips, cliffs, forests and birdlife.

The island world provides a nature experience that is different from the inland of Västmanland. The distances feel different when you have to plan for disembarkation, weather and the possibility of getting back. A short walk on an island can be more demanding than expected if the rocks are slippery or if the pack has to be carried from the beach.

Always check the area's regulations, especially during bird protection periods. Be considerate of nesting birds and keep your distance from private jetties and homes. The nature map is a good start for finding information about trails, reserves and accessibility.

For a day trip, you don't need much equipment, but a dry change of clothes, water and wind protection are wise. For kayaking excursions or longer stays on the islands, safety becomes more important than low weight. Water, weather and return travel must work even when plans change.

6. Klackberg – mining landscape with water-filled open pits

Klackberg near Norberg is a clear example of how Västmanland's nature and industrial history are intertwined. The old mining area has water-filled open pits, slag formations and forest that is slowly reclaiming the land.

A hiking trail of approximately 3.6 kilometers takes you through the area. The distance is not long, but the environment is varied. You move between forests, mountains and mining ruins, which makes the tour feel more eventful than the distance suggests.

Here you need to pay attention to the ground. Mining areas can have steep edges, uneven paths and slippery rocks. Stick to marked paths and respect any barriers. This is especially important when children or dogs are with you.

Klackberg is a good place to visit as a short excursion or as part of a day trip where you also visit other parts of Bergslagen. Bring shoes with stable soles and give yourself time to stop at the information boards. The nature experience is enhanced when you understand why the landscape looks the way it does.

7. Fjällberget – Västmanland's highest point

The highest point in the province is mentioned in the series. For Västmanland it is Fjällberget, approximately 466 meters above sea level . The mountain is located near Grängesberg on the border with Dalarna. It is important to distinguish between the province and the county: Västmanland County's highest point is Timmeråsarna, approximately 331 meters above sea level.

Fjällberget is not a mountain summit hike. A short hike from the ski resort to the summit is described as approximately 2.5 kilometers round trip, with a mix of forest road and ski slope. The difference in altitude is noticeable, especially if you walk fast or carry heavy loads.

The point of the visit is not the dramatic height, but the perspective. The landscape of Västmanland is forested and relatively low-lying, but here you still get a clear summit and a concrete conclusion to the series.

Use a map or a working offline map and check access and conditions before setting off. A simple hike doesn't require advanced equipment, but rain gear, water, and a warm layer are still reasonable safety margins. It's the balance that counts: light enough to be comfortable, rugged enough to work in changing weather.

How to choose equipment for Västmanland

For shorter trips in reserves and at Lake Mälaren, the following is often sufficient:

  • a smaller backpack
  • water and lunch bag
  • stable hiking shoes
  • rain and wind protection
  • an extra reinforcement garment
  • map, charged phone and basic first aid

For Bruksleden, Kolarbyn or a night in the forest, you will need a tent, kitchen, sleeping bag and sleeping mat. This is when the sleeping system becomes particularly important. A sleeping mat that is too thin will let the cold ground through and impair recovery, even if the sleeping bag on paper has the right temperature limit.

When choosing a sleeping bag or quilt, you can read our guide to down in sleeping bags , where CUIN, different types of down and fill weight are explained in more detail. Always ask: What will the product actually handle, in what season and with what packing?

Västmanland rarely requires extreme equipment. It requires equipment that works reliably in the forest, by the lake and on rocky ground. The best pack is not the lightest in all situations. It is the one that allows you to continue safely when your legs get tired and the weather changes.
