Hiking in Skåne: Guide to the most beautiful trails and best tips

View of Söderåsens National Park in Skåne

Skåne is often associated with vast rapeseed fields and flat landscapes, but for the hiker, something completely different lies beneath the surface. Here you will find everything from dramatic rift valleys reminiscent of a miniature Grand Canyon to barren rocky coasts and rolling beech forests that look like they came straight out of a fairy tale.

Whether you're a seasoned "ultralight" enthusiast or planning your very first weekend trip, Skåne offers accessibility that's hard to beat in the rest of Sweden. Here we go over the absolute best trails, the most worth seeing places, and how to optimize your equipment to make the experience as smooth as possible.

Söderåsen: Drama in the Hjortsprångsrundan

If you only have time for one hike in Skåne, Söderåsen National Park should be at the top of your list. Söderåsen is one of Northern Europe's largest continuous areas of deciduous forest, and deep valleys cut through the landscape.

The Hjortsprångsrundan is the jewel of the park. It is a technical and at times demanding loop of about 8 km that takes you along the edge of the dramatic Skäralidsdalen valley. The name comes from a legend about deer being chased over the cliff, and when you stand on the cliff ledges and look down into the ravine you will understand why.

  • Tip: Walk the trail counterclockwise. This gives you the most challenging climbs at the beginning and saves the most beautiful views at Kopparhatten for last.
  • Equipment: The importance of good grip is evident here. A pair of proper boots or trail runners is a must when the rocks get damp in the beech forest.

Kullaberg: Where the mountain meets the sea

At the far end of the Kulla peninsula, right by Mölle, rises the Kullaberg nature reserve. This is a completely different type of terrain than Söderåsen. Here, salt spray, caves and vertical cliffs are the order of the day.

The hike here is physically demanding with many meters of elevation gain, but the reward is miles of views over the Sound and Kattegat. Don't miss visiting one of the many caves, such as Silvergrottan or Lahibiagrottan, but be prepared that it requires some agility.

For those who want to stay overnight, Kullaberg is a great place to test out your lightweight gear. Pitching a compact tent like the Lanshan 2 on a permitted campsite with the ocean as your neighbor is a world-class experience. Remember that the wind can bite out here – make sure your tent pegs are secure.

Österlen Trail: Sand, slopes and culture

The Österlen Trail (part of the Skåneleden SL4) offers a more meditative experience. Here you hike through the hills of Brösarp – an undulating cultural landscape that is beautiful all year round, but perhaps most of all when the heather is in bloom.

The trail takes you further down towards the sea and Stenshuvud National Park. Here you will find one of Skåne's most iconic views from the "head" (mountain) and white sandy beaches that look like they belong in the tropics. Further south you will pass Ales Stenar at Kåseberga, one of Sweden's largest shipwrecks.

News SL7: The South Coast Trail

For those who want something completely new, the Skåneleden Trail has recently been expanded with SL7 Sydkust . This stretch runs between Trelleborg and Ystad and is about 65 km long. It is a flatter hike that follows the coast closely, perfect for those who want to walk a long distance without their knees taking too much of a beating from the altitude. It is a fantastic trail for discovering small fishing villages and enjoying the open coastal landscape.

Magleröd: The roof of Skåne

You can't talk about hiking in a region without mentioning its highest point. In Skåne, Magleröd on Söderåsen holds the title at 212 meters above sea level. The place has recently been named "Skånehatten".

Although it doesn't require an oxygen mask to reach the top, it's a nice achievement to have visited the highest point in the landscape. It's hidden in a grove near Stenestad and is a perfect detour if you're on Söderåsen anyway.

Pack right for Skåne adventures

When hiking in Skåne, the logistics are often simple, which tempts many to pack too much "just in case". But remember: the mountain (or ridge) rarely punishes those who carry light. Here is our philosophy on equipment for a successful trip:

1. The Big Three (The Big Three)

Your tent , backpack and sleeping system are the heaviest items in your pack. By investing in an ultralight tent like the Lanshan 2 and a backpack with a good carrying system, you will save kilos that will be immediately noticeable in your legs when you climb the steep slopes of Söderåsen.

2. Sleep is non-negotiable

Although Skåne has a milder climate than the mountains, the ground chill can be noticeable, especially during spring and autumn. A good night's sleep is crucial for recovery. When choosing a sleeping bag, down is often the superior choice to keep weight down. For a deep dive into how to choose the right insulation, read our complete guide to bird down in sleeping bags . There we explain all about CUIN and the difference between goose and duck down.

3. Layers upon layers

The weather in Skåne can change quickly, especially on the coast. A breathable shell and a warm layer are essential. Think function over trends – the equipment should solve a problem, not just look good in a picture.

Summary: Find your balance

Hiking in Skåne is about balance. The balance between the tough steeps of Söderåsen and the quiet beaches of Österlen. But also the balance in your equipment. You don't have to carry your entire home on your back, but you also shouldn't compromise on safety or a good night's sleep.

What's next for you? Is it to conquer Magleröd, or to test your legs along the new SL7 trail? Whatever your goal, we at HikingStore make sure you have the right gear to make your adventure memorable. See you on the trail!
