Hiking Gotland: coast, cliffs and open landscapes
Hiking on Gotland is less about altitude and more about exposure. Sea breeze, sun, limestone cliffs and long open stretches affect the day more than many people think. That's why the island is so nice to hike on. You get great views, easily accessible day trips and a terrain that feels special after the first few kilometers.
For many, hiking Gotland begins with the coastal stretches around Visby or the northern parts of the island, but it is the Klintkustleden that really deserves to be in the center. The trail connects some of Gotland's most dramatic environments with the sea constantly nearby. The surface alternates between paths, pebbles, limestone and parts where the pace naturally drops. That's not a problem, it's part of the experience.
The important thing is to pack for reality. On Gotland, you are rarely saved by shade, shelter or soft ground. The question is therefore simple: what should the equipment actually be able to handle? For summer hiking, light packing is often enough, but wind protection, water and good sleep are still what determine how good the trip will be. We have good equipment for summer hiking if you want to build a pack that feels light on your legs without being unnecessarily compromised.
Klintkustleden: Gotland's best choice for those who want to go far
If you are looking for hiking in Gotland and want a trail that really shows the island's character, the Klintkustleden is the natural first choice. Here you get coastal hiking with sea views, cliff edges, pine forest and open areas where the weather is felt directly on your body. It is a trail that is suitable for both longer stages and for those who pick the icing on the cake with day trips.
The stretches around Högklint and further along the coast are especially worth planning. Here the views are magnificent without the terrain being technically difficult. At the same time, you shouldn't underestimate the surface. Limestone, roots and rocky sections mean your feet are constantly working. A pair of light but stable shoes often last a long time during the summer months, but only if they provide grip and if you yourself are used to walking with a lighter pack.
Fårö: barren, open and very easy to like
A stone's throw from northern Gotland lies Fårö, and it's hard to talk about hiking Gotland without mentioning the island. Fårö is more open, drier and even more exposed to the weather than many parts of the main island. At the same time, that's exactly what makes the place so memorable. The Raukfälten at Langhammars and Digers are the most famous stops, but the very feeling of Fårö lies just as much in the windswept pines, the bright paths and the almost constant encounter with the sea.
A nice day trip goes through the Marpes nature reserve. Here you hike through rocky terrain and sparse pine forests where the wind often sets the conditions. The ground can be loose, sandy or rocky, which becomes noticeable in your legs after a few hours. It's a good example of why packing light helps, but also why you shouldn't skimp on water, sunscreen or an extra layer for breaks.
Tips for the Sheep Walker:
- Water: There are few natural sources of drinkable water. Bring at least 2 liters per person for a day trip.
- Sun protection: Shade is in short supply on the coast and in the rauk fields. A cap, sunglasses and sun protection factor make a big difference.
- Windbreaker: A thin windbreaker or light shell jacket is often more useful than the forecast suggests.
Visby and Högklint: close to the city, close to the sea
For those who want to combine city life with nature, the trip from Visby to Högklint is a very good choice. It is a stretch that shows why hiking Gotland works so well even for a shorter trip. You quickly get out into more open landscapes and pass Södra Hällarna, where nature feels larger than the distance from the city suggests.
When you reach Högklint, you get one of the best views on Gotland. The cliffs drop dramatically into the sea, and the place works great for a longer break or a simple lunch. For many, this is enough as a day trip. For others, it will be the start of the desire to walk longer parts of the Klintkustleden next time.
Sleep and recovery: Non-negotiables
After a full day on the limestone cliffs, your recovery is crucial. Gotland nights can be surprisingly cool, even in summer, due to the humid sea air. If you plan to camp, you need a sleeping bag that can keep the moisture out and the heat in.
The choice of insulation here is a balance between weight and function. Down is unbeatable when it comes to packability and warmth in relation to weight, but it requires you to keep it dry. For those who want to delve into how different types of down (from goose, duck or eider) affect your sleep, we recommend our complete guide to bird down in sleeping bags . There we also explain technical concepts such as CUIN and how fill weight affects comfort temperature.
A sleeping bag like the Aegismax G2 is an excellent choice for the Gotland hike during spring, summer and early autumn. It provides high insulation in relation to its small packing volume.

Camping on Gotland – what's involved?
The right of public access applies on Gotland, but there are important exceptions to keep in mind. The island has many nature reserves where there are often tent bans or clear rules for fires and overnight stays. Always check local regulations before setting up camp.
- Check the signage: Each nature reserve has its own rules.
- Consider the ground: On limestone outcrops and coastal terrain, it can be difficult to get pegs down properly. A lightweight, self-supporting or semi-self-supporting tent is often a more logical choice than one that requires perfect ground.
- Choose a tent by location, not trend: For coastal camping on Gotland, light weight is good, but wind stability and easy set-up outweigh saving the last few grams. A light dome tent or other flexible lightweight tent for hiking often works better than a more demanding setup when the wind increases.
- Use fire wisely: During the summer, the risk of fire is often high. Use a gas stove rather than an open fire.
For summer coastal hiking, the point is simple: the tent should be light enough to carry all day, but reliable enough when the wind picks up in the evening. Balance beats extreme lightweight every time.
Summary: Hiking Gotland requires the right balance
Hiking Gotland is at its best when you accept the island for what it is: open, beautiful, windy and sometimes more demanding than it first appears. The Klintkustleden gives you the great coastal experience. Fårö gives you the barren and almost unreal landscape. Visby and Högklint make it easy to get out quickly without compromising on the feeling.
Pack light, but not stupidly light. Choose equipment that can handle wind, dry days, cool evenings and hard ground. That's where a good trip is decided. If you need to update your pack for the summer, we have good equipment for summer hiking, from lightweight tents to sleeping bags and other equipment that works when the weather changes on the coast.
