Gästrikland is often described as a miniature Sweden, and for hikers this is no exaggeration. Here the Uppland plain, the Norrland terrain and the dramatic sea coast meet in a relatively small area. For those looking for functional and logical hiking, the landscape offers everything from the deep, quiet forests along the Gästrikeleden to the unique, water-borne landscape of Färnebofjärden National Park.
Hiking here, however, requires a pragmatic approach to equipment. The terrain quickly shifts between dry pine moors, damp moorland and rugged coastal cliffs. It’s not about having the most expensive gear for the sake of it, but about understanding what each product is actually going to handle when the weather changes or when the miles start to feel like they’re in your legs.
Gästrikeleden – The backbone of the landscape
The Gästrikeleden is the main trail in Gästrikland: an approximately 270 km long trail that winds through the entire landscape. It is divided into four large stages that connect Gävle, Sandviken, Ockelbo and Hofors. For those who want to understand the landscape on foot, this is the most logical starting point. Here you move through historic farm environments, over bogs and through the deep Gästrik forests that give the trail its distinctive character.
When planning a longer trip on the Gästrikeleden trail, the focus should be on the "big three": the tent, the backpack and the sleeping system. Weight is a factor, but in the forests of Gästrikland, stability and moisture management are at least as important. A heavy backpack quickly becomes noticeable in the legs when the stages drag on or the surface changes between paths, footbridges and rockier forest areas.
Choosing a tent for varied terrain
There are plenty of shelters along the Gästrikeleden trail, but relying on them alone is risky during peak season. Bringing your own tent gives you the freedom to camp where the ground is flat and the views are best. In the dense forests, the ground can be soft and damp, requiring a tent with a high water column in the floor and good ventilation to avoid condensation.

An ultralight dome tent is often preferable here, as it is self-supporting and easier to place in the sometimes limited spaces offered in rockier forest areas. Remember that a light tent is good for your knees, but it should never come at the expense of keeping you dry during a persistent autumn rainstorm.
Färnebofjärden National Park – Where the water dictates the conditions
Färnebofjärden is one of Gästrikland's most striking contrasts. Here, the nature of southern and northern Sweden meets at the Dalälven River, and this is immediately noticeable in the landscape. River channels, flooded forests, coastal meadows and old coniferous forest lie close to each other. As a hiker, you will often be near the water here, which means you have to take two specific factors into account: humidity and insects.
Gysinge Bruk is a perfect starting point, not least thanks to Naturum Färnebofjärden, which provides a quick and practical overview of the area's trails, birdlife and current conditions. For a shorter trip, the Kungsslingan is a good fit, an easily accessible 1 kilometer loop. If you want a slightly more connected hike, Bändan vid Gysinge is a good next step, around 4 kilometers depending on the current route. Here, it is not the altitude that is challenging, but rather the ability to keep your equipment dry and protected from the humid air that rises from the river during cold nights.
Färnebofjärden is also an area where it makes sense to combine hiking with paddling. What is each product actually designed to do here? If you're walking one day and moving on the water the next, your pack needs to withstand moisture, splashes and repeated temperature changes. A dry sleeping bag, dry changes and waterproof pack organization are more important than chasing grams.
Warning: always check for current updates on storm-fallen trees before setting off, for example via Naturkartan. Trail routes can change quickly after severe weather, and a plan that looked simple at home can become unnecessarily slow in the field.
The sleeping system and ground cooling
In a humid river landscape like Färnebofjärden, the choice of sleeping bag and sleeping pad is crucial for recovery. A bad night due to ground chilling (what we call ground chilling) ruins the next day's hike more than a heavy pack does.
When choosing a sleeping bag for these environments, the fill material is key. Down offers the best warmth to weight ratio, but it requires respect. To understand the difference between different types of down, how the CUIN value affects warmth to weight, and how fill weight actually affects the end result, we recommend our complete guide to bird down in sleeping bags . There, we go over why different down choices work differently in practice and how to protect your sleeping bag from the moisture that is difficult to avoid at campsites near water.

Coastal walk along the Virgin Coast
Gästrikland's coastal stretch, known as the Virgin Coast, offers a completely different type of hiking. Here, the polished granite cliffs, small fishing villages and salty sea air dominate. Areas such as Axmar Bruk and Norrsundet offer trails where the wind is your constant companion.
On the coast, the weather is more exposed. What starts as a sunny morning can quickly turn into whipping rain and strong winds from the Bothnian Sea. Here, shell clothing and wind protection are more important than insulation.
Protection from the elements
A pragmatic hiker always has a reinforcement garment or a sturdy rain cover close at hand. When hiking along the coast, a sturdy rain poncho that covers both you and your backpack can be a lifesaver when the wind makes it difficult to handle a regular raincoat. If you need to supplement the rest of your pack, it is also logical to review our backpacks and sleeping mat categories, especially if the trip combines coast, forest and wet campsites.

Remember that salt water and wind can wear down your equipment. Make sure your boots are well lubricated and your shell clothing has an intact waterproofing. The coastal rocks can be extremely slippery when wet, so shoes with good grip are a safety issue rather than a comfort issue.
The logic of packing: What do you really need?
When we talk about hiking in Gästrikland, it's all about balance. You don't need to pack for an expedition in Sarek, but you also shouldn't underestimate the forests' ability to surprise you with cold and wet weather.
- Feet first: Gästrikland has a lot of marshland and damp forest areas. Invest in boots that keep the moisture out but also breathe. Feel free to add gaiters to avoid getting debris and moisture in from above.
- Layering: It's a cliché for a reason. By wearing multiple thin layers, you can easily regulate your temperature as you move between wind-sheltered forest areas and open fields or coastal stretches.
- The importance of rest: As we mentioned earlier, a good sleeping pad and a suitable sleeping bag are the foundation for your next stage. Read on in our down guide to how to choose the right insulation for your trip.
- Navigation: Although the trails in Gästrikland are generally well marked, you should always carry a physical map and compass with you. Mobile coverage can be patchy in the deeper forests, and batteries die faster in the cold.
Summary: Respect for the terrain
Hiking in Gästrikland is about appreciating the small details – the silence of a pine forest, the running water of the Dalälven River and the rugged encounter with the sea. By choosing your equipment with care and understanding of the demands of the environment, you can focus on the experience instead of fretting about wet socks or a freezing night.
The best equipment is the one you don't think about once you're out there. It should work logically, be reliable, and give you the protection you need when the weather changes. Whether you're taking a day trip to Mattön or tackling the entire Gästrikeleden Trail, preparation and the right equipment are key to a successful adventure.
